This program provides legal education for the practice of law. In that context, it provides knowledge of the legal system and legal principles, and cultivates a capacity for legal research, analysis and communication. The program also deals with theoretical perspectives on the law and encourages an appreciation of legal issues of special significance to the Northern Territory, including Aboriginal legal issues.

The program comprises core units and specialist electives. The Law core units are Introduction to Law, Constitutional Law, Criminal Law, Torts, Contracts, Equity, Trusts, Administrative Law, Property Law, Corporations Law, Evidence, Civil Procedure and Professional Responsibility.

This course can also be studied in the external mode. External students have access to live online tutorials as well as online access to the audiotapes of all lectures, enabling them to complete the course from anywhere in the world.


The degree provides the academic foundation for admission to legal practice in the Northern Territory and elsewhere in Australia. Students should seek advice from the admitting authority in the State or Territory in which they propose to seek admission to professional practice. To be admitted to legal practice in Australia, law graduates must also complete the Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice (GDLP). The GDLP may be taken through the College of Law, Sydney and can be completed online from anywhere in Australia or overseas. The College of Law provides a focus relevant to the State or Territory in which the student is studying.

Charles Darwin University is the major tertiary education and vocational education and training institution in the Northern Territory.

Originally established as a tertiary institution in 1974, it became the Northern Territory University in 1989 and Charles Darwin University in 2003.

The main University campus is located at Casuarina in Darwin with campuses at Alice Springs, Katherine and Palmerston. VET courses are also offered at Jabiru, Nhulunbuy, Tennant Creek and Yulara Centres as well as at various remote community centres.

The University provides multi-sector education with Senior Secondary, VET, Higher Education and Research facilities.

CDU also deliver a number of courses through the Australian Centre for Indigenous Knowledges and Education (ACIKE), which is a joint initiative between Charles Darwin University (CDU) and the Batchelor Institute of Indigenous Tertiary Education (BIITE). The three main sites for delivery will be at the main ACIKE Hub CDU Casuarina campus and at the BIITE campuses at Batchelor and the Alice Springs Desert Peoples' Centre.
