This qualification is part of the Community Services Training Package. It reflects the role of workers in a range of education settings, including public and independent schools and community education settings, who provide assistance and support to teachers and students under broad-based supervision.

17 units: 12 core; 5 elective

Core: Support behaviour of children and young people; Comply with legislative, policy and industrial requirements in the education environment; Assist implementation of planned educational programs; Contribute to student education in all developmental domains; Contribute to organisation and management of classroom or centre; Support the development of literacy and oral language skills; Support the development of numeracy skills; Work effectively with students and colleagues; Contribute to the health and safety of students; Support students with additional needs in the classroom environment; Work effectively with culturally diverse clients and co-workers; Work effectively with Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people. Plus electives.

Where work involves a specific focus on Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander and/or culturally diverse clients or communities, one or both of the following electives is recommended: Work effectively with culturally diverse clients and co-workers; Work effectively with Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people. The following elective is required in some jurisdictions to meet legislative requirements for mandatory reporting of child abuse: Identify and respond to children and young people at risk. In some jurisdictions it is a condition of employment that Education Support Workers are competent in basic first aid.

Charles Darwin University is the major tertiary education and vocational education and training institution in the Northern Territory.

Originally established as a tertiary institution in 1974, it became the Northern Territory University in 1989 and Charles Darwin University in 2003.

The main University campus is located at Casuarina in Darwin with campuses at Alice Springs, Katherine and Palmerston. VET courses are also offered at Jabiru, Nhulunbuy, Tennant Creek and Yulara Centres as well as at various remote community centres.

The University provides multi-sector education with Senior Secondary, VET, Higher Education and Research facilities.

CDU also deliver a number of courses through the Australian Centre for Indigenous Knowledges and Education (ACIKE), which is a joint initiative between Charles Darwin University (CDU) and the Batchelor Institute of Indigenous Tertiary Education (BIITE). The three main sites for delivery will be at the main ACIKE Hub CDU Casuarina campus and at the BIITE campuses at Batchelor and the Alice Springs Desert Peoples' Centre.
