Bush Children's Education Foundation - Dr Peter Pockley Memorial Scholarship

Charles Sturt University

A pioneer of science journalism in Australia, Dr Peter Pockley was a scholarship boy right through his schooling & tertiary studies at Geelong Grammar, University of Melbourne and at Balliol College Oxford University. He taught in England and at the University of Sydney before being appointed first Head of the Science Unit of the ABC, becoming the voice of science broadcasting including the landing on the moon. Peter later set up the Public Affairs Department at the University of New South Wales & the Centre for Science Communication at UTS. He was a prolific writer for the worldwide press and electronic media. In 2010 he was awarded the Academy Medal of the Australian Academy of Science from the Governor-General. In a sense he was the People's Scientist translating complex issues into everyday language. He recognised the struggles of students and was a long standing donor to the Bush Children's Education Foundation until his death in 2013.
