Master of Nutrition and Dietetics

This degree focuses on the study of food in relation to health and illness. Nutrition examines the role of food and nutrients in the metabolic and physiological processes of the body and Dietetics is concerned with the prevention and treatment of a variety of food related diseases. Dietitians/nutritionists interpret scientific knowledge about food in relation to health and translate it into practical information to help individuals and communities change their eating habits and improve health. Applications are encouraged from people of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent. Some scholarship support may be available.

Structure

To qualify for the Master of Nutrition and Dietetics, a student must complete 72 units with a grade of P or NGP or better in each topic.

Entry requirements

  • Applicants must normally hold a bachelor degree or an equivalent qualification from an approved tertiary institution which includes:
  • At least the equivalent of 13.5 Flinders units (0.375 EFTSL) across the course of their undergraduate program in human nutrition and food science topics in the areas of basic nutrition principles, life cycle nutrition and food science
  • At least the equivalent of 18 Flinders units (0.5 EFTSL) of introductory bioscience topics studied at first year level, including at least 9 Flinders units (0.25 EFTSL) of human biology and 4.5 Flinders units (0.125 EFTSL) of chemistry
  • At least the equivalent of 9 Flinders units (0.25 EFTSL) in human biochemistry topics studied at second year undergraduate level
  • At least the equivalent of 9 Flinders units (0.25 EFTSL) in human physiology topics studied at second year undergraduate level
  • A Grade Point Average (GPA) of at least 5
