The Bursary was founded in 2013 with funds donated by Professor Richard Hays founding Dean of Medicine at James Cook University and recognises the academic achievement and community involvement of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander medical students.

Eligibility

Applicants must: be Australian citizens; be of Australian Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent; be admitted to the Bachelor of Medicine/Bachelor of Surgery; be enrolled full-time in their second, third, fourth or fifth year of study; and have not previously been a recipient of the Richard Hays Foundation Dean of Medicine Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Bursary.

The bursary will be supported for 6 years.

Amount $1,500

The scholarship is valued at $1,500 for one year or such amount as the Selection Committee may determine from time to time. The value of the scholarship in the final year of the award (2019) shall be $1,500 plus the balance of interest accrued on the account.
