Exercise physiologists specialise in designing and delivering exercise, lifestyle and behavioural modification programs for people throughout the community, including those with chronic illnesses and health conditions such as heart disease, diabetes and arthritis. This course aims to provide the skills and knowledge to design and implement exercise programs for people with known disease. Theory and practice are integrated through supervised clinical experience and clinically related studies. You will develop strong clinical and professional skills to prescribe and monitor exercise to assess and enhance health and function after injury or chronic disease. The qualification awarded on graduation is recognised in the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) as Level 9.

Structure

To qualify for the award of Master of Exercise Physiology, students must complete 180 credit points as follows: 165 core credit-points 15 elective credit points

Standard entry requirements

  • Postgraduate: Prerequisites - Course specific requirements - Only candidates eligible for accreditation by Exercise and Sports Science Australia (ESSA) as an exercise scientist can be admitted to this course.
  • Postgraduate: Prerequisites - Course specific requirements - Specialisation - compulsory: Exercise Science, completed within the last five years. Essential prerequisites studies in Anatomy and Physiology, Exercise Physiology, Biomechanics, Exercise Psychology, and Motor Control and Learning.
  • Postgraduate: Prerequisites - Course specific requirements - WAM - Weighted Average Mark (WAM) 65% Additional WAM and Early Conditional Offer Information
  • Postgraduate: Prerequisites - Undergraduate requirements - Successful completion of an Australian bachelor degree (or equivalent).
  • International: IELTS - 6.5 < 6.0 (PG minimum) - 6.5 IELTS (Academic) with no individual band less than 6.0.

Recognition

?The Master of Exercise Physiology is accredited at the level of exercise physiology by Exercise and Sports Science, Australia (ESSA). Graduates of the Master of Exercise Physiology may apply for membership with ESSA. Membership may be subject to additional or ongoing requirements beyond completion of the degree. In order to apply for accreditation as an Accredited Exercise Physiologist (AEP) with Exercise & Sports Science Australia (ESSA), candidates should enter the Master of Exercise Physiology being eligible for exercise science membership with ESSA. Therefore, students intending to apply for accreditation as an Exercise Physiologist will normally have graduated from a National University Course Accreditation Program (NUCAP) with an undergraduate degree in Exercise Science from La Trobe or another Australian university.
