Master of Philosophy - Business and Economics (By Research)

Enrolment in a master's by research degree involves the independent investigation of a research problem that has been formulated by the student. It is expected that the research undertaken will make a contribution to the discipline in which enrolled by applying, critiquing, analysing or interpreting that knowledge in ways that facilitate pathways for further learning. Students will be supported by a supervisory team.

Entry Requirements:

An upper 2nd class bachelor degree requiring minimum four years of full-time study, including a research component in the fourth year; or a course leading to a masters preliminary qualification at a level rated as equivalent to an upper 2nd class Honours degree; or qualifications, which in the opinion of the committee, are equivalent or a satisfactory substitute.


This course consists of a coursework component and a research and thesis component.

Study Pathways:

Students may apply to upgrade to PhD candidature after a defined period (usually 9-12 months candidature, full-time or equivalent), provided that satisfactory progress has been made and certain conditions are met. Those students who want to upgrade from MPhil to PhD must achieve a mark of 70% or higher in the compulsory coursework.

Further information:

All students are required to attend the graduate seminars organised by the department in which they are enrolled. They will also be expected to attend and participate regularly in the seminar series. Students are required to present one seminar. The graduate seminar is an unweighted unit, and does not count as one of the units required.
