Master of Surgery (By Research)

This program is offered by the Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences. Candidature involves the independent investigation of a research problem that has been formulated by the candidate. It is expected that the research undertaken will make a contribution to the knowledge and understanding of the chosen discipline by applying, clarifying, critiquing or interpreting that knowledge. Candidates are supported by a minimum of two supervisors throughout their candidature.

Entry Requirements:

Must have qualified not less than 2 years previously for the degrees of Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) or equivalent at Monash University or another university approved by the faculty board


Candidates are required to submit a thesis of approximately 50,000 words on a research topic of their choice. For supervised candidates the research topic will be chosen in consultation with the supervisor who will monitor and evaluate the candidate's work throughout the program. This course may be undertaken at approved off-site locations.

An applicant must also intend to pursue a career in surgery or have applied for or been accepted into the Surgical Education and Training program of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons or an equivalent surgical training program approved by the faculty board; or hold a Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons or equivalent higher surgical qualification as approved by the faculty board. In addition, an applicant must have been substantially engaged, since qualifying for the degree of Bachelor of Surgery or its equivalent, in the practice and study of surgery or scientific work relevant to the practice of surgery to the satisfaction of the faculty board.
