Bachelor of Engineering - Mechanical Engineering (Honours) / Bachelor of Industrial Design (Honours)

RMIT University

Combining mechanical engineering and industrial design, you'll gain technical and creative skills to engage at a professional level with the design and development of advanced manufactured products. As an RMIT mechanical engineering and industrial design double degree student, you'll learn a wide range of skills from the integration of these highly complementary disciplines. In the final year of your studies you'll undertake a major project that is either industry-based or simulates an industrial situation. You'll work with industry leaders using the theory and practical experience gained through the program to solve a problem. You'll also complete engineering industry experience that allows you to gain first-hand experience in an engineering practice environment. Opportunities also exist for an overseas work placement. Graduates can work in mechanical and industrial design areas such as biomedical, automotive and electro-mechanical product design.

Course Fee:

Australian: $190,080
International: $200,640

Entry Requirements:

Current Year 12 prerequisite units 3 and 4 - a study score of at least 25 in one of Mathematical Methods (any) or Specialist Mathematics; and a study score of at least 25 in any English (except EAL) or at least 30 in English (EAL).

Years 1 and 2 - In the first two years, you'll study basic mechanical engineering and industrial design courses. In these years, you will be exposed to the fundamentals of engineering sciences, mathematics, engineering design, and engineering professional practice. These are aimed at developing competence in essential analytical problem-solving skills and design capabilities. You'll also gain a basic understanding of the methods and nature of the designed form, and learn about the socio-cultural factors of design and designing. Years 3, 4 and 5 - In the final years of the program, specialist mechanical engineering elective courses are offered in various streams of expertise. You'll be provided with the challenge of defining and demonstrating an area of professional engagement through a year-long, research-led and industry-engaged design project.
