You'll gain the knowledge and skills for Chinese herbal medicine and acupuncture practice with an emphasis on integrated clinical care through an evidence based approach. Graduates will be able to practise Chinese herbal medicine and acupuncture at an internationally accepted level. Studies begin with the basics of cell biology and Chinese medicine principles. Anatomy, physiology, immunology and pathology follow, so you understand the body's normal and abnormal states. You will be able to accurately locate needle acupuncture points and learn herbal medicine formulations and understand the different clinical conditions that acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine can treat. You'll learn both Western and Chinese medicine diagnosis and then apply this knowledge to patients at the RMIT Health Sciences Clinic. Clinical observation starts from first year in the RMIT clinic and concludes with a final-year clinical internship in China through the Nanjing University of Chinese Medicine.

Entry Requirements:

Year 12 prerequisite units 3 and 4 - a study score of at least 30 in English (ESL) or at least 25 in any other English.


Year 1 - Your studies begin with the basics of cell biology and Chinese medicine principles. Anatomy and physiology follow, so you understand the body's normal and abnormal states. Year 2 - You will study the basic theory of acupuncture and be able to accurately locate acupuncture points. You will learn Chinese herbal medicine and formulations in detail. Year 3 - You will have further study in pathology, pharmacology, toxicology and medical examination. You will sp understand the different clinical conditions that acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine can treat. Year 4 - You will study a range of clinical courses covering common conditions in Chinese internal medicine, dermatology/, gynaecology and traumatology in Chinese medicine. Year 5 - You will continue studying clinical conditions covering eye, ENT and paediatrics. You will also receive advanced clinical training and undertake a clinical internship in China over one semester, with the flexibility to remain on-campus.

Study Pathways:

If you successfully complete the Bachelor of Health Science / Bachelor of Applied Science (Chinese Medicine), you may be eligible to apply for Master of Science (Complementary Medicine) research degree and then continue to study the PhD degree.
