This qualification is part of the Public Sector Training Package. It covers the competencies required for independent and self-directed work as an interpreting practitioner. It reflects the skills and knowledge required to interpret from a source language to a target language in complex dialogue and monologue settings where the physical elements of the setting or number of parties involved can challenge the capacity of the interpreter to manage the discourse. The interpreter will require advanced skills in retention and recall and may be required to switch modes.

No minimum education. Applicants must demonstrate sufficient language proficiency in English and another language.

15 units: 8 core; 7 elective

Core: Apply codes and standards to professional judgement; Negotiate translating and interpreting assignments; Interpret in complex dialogue settings (LOTE-English); Interpret in complex monologue settings (LOTE-English); Interpret through communication media;Manage discourses in complex settings; Sight translate (LOTE-English); Use complex subject area terminology in interpreting (LOTE-English). Electives: Use note taking to recall and reproduce source messages (LOTE-English); Demonstrate complex LOTE proficiency in different subjects and cultural contexts; Build glossaries for translating and interpreting assignments; Interpret as part of a team; Apply theories to translating and interpreting work practices; plus more.
