Master of Laboratory Medicine
The Laboratory Medicine program is designed for graduates of biology, biotechnology, biomedical science, or related degrees. If you are interested in a career in diagnostic pathology or medical research, this is the program for you. You will gain first-hand experience of the latest advances in diagnostic medicine. You will develop the knowledge and skills to be a key player in the innovation and development of the industry. This program covers practical laboratory skills and advanced, innovative techniques in diagnostic pathology. It also includes extensive placement experiences in research facilities and professional diagnostic laboratories, with a minimum of 16 weeks of career ready placement.

Subjects
- You will have the option to choose from two specialisations: * Clinical specialisation - this specialisation is co-designed with industry to prepare you to work within diagnostic medical laboratories, and includes clinical disciplines such as haematology, clinical chemistry, medical microbiology, immunology and genomics. You will complete 16 weeks of career ready placement within modern laboratory medicine facilities. * Research specialisation - this specialisation opens students up to medical research opportunities. You will be prepared to work in clinical laboratory research, or in the field of medical technology and applications for pathology equipment. You will complete a 12-month placement program in a research facility.
Entry requirements
- Entry into the Master of Laboratory Medicine (160 units) will be available for applicants who have completed a 3-year AQF 7 Bachelor degree (or equivalent) in a Health, Medical or Biomedical discipline. Applicants who have completed the Graduate Certificate in Laboratory Medicine offered at the University of Newcastle (or equivalent) may enter with 40 units of RPL. A Semester 2 intake at Callaghan into the Master of Laboratory Medicine is available for applicants who have successfully completed 75% (30 units) of the the Graduate Certificate in Laboratory Medicine at the University of Newcastle. Applicants may enter the Research specialisation with credit for HUBS6401A, HUBS6401B, HUBS6402A and HUBS6402B if they have completed: *The Bachelor of Biomedical Science (Honours), Bachelor of Medical Science (Honours), Bachelor of Health Science (Honours), Bachelor of Nursing (Honours) or the Bachelor of Midwifery (Honours) programs from the University of Newcastle
- OR *80 units (or equivalent) of full-time (or part-time equivalent) research, i.e. MPhil, or 12 months full-time (or part-time equivalent) of a PhD.
