Software engineers address all aspects of software production from strategy and design to coding, quality and management. This course includes foundations in mathematics, computer science and computer system principles, with further studies in programming languages, databases, operating systems and enterprise and internet scale systems.

Entry Requirements:

Year 12 or equivalent; selection via ATAR. HSC Mathematics Extension 1, Physics. From 2019, this course will require a course prerequisite of Mathematics (Band 4 or higher). The assumed knowledge will still apply.


The first-year program is in common with Electrical Engineering. The second-year program offers emphasis on science and technology, computer science and microcomputer programming. The program further specialises in the third and fourth years in software engineering applications and core final-year subjects have emphasis on software project management and design.

Those who attempt Engineering without a prior assumed level of knowledge may experience difficulty. The University strongly encourages students to undertake an appropriate bridging course.
