The scheme was established in recognition of Dr Arnold 'Puggy' Hunter's significant contribution to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health. The PHMSS aims to help address the under-representation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in health professions and assist in increasing the number of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people with professional health qualifications.
Applicants must be of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent and currently enrolled or intending to enrol in an entry level course at an Australian educational institution (Certificate IV and above) in the following health professions: Aboriginal health work, allied health (excluding pharmacy), dentistry/oral health (excluding dental assistants), medicine, midwifery and nursing.

The scholarship is available under the ACN National Research and Scholarship Fund.
Applicants must: be registered nurses with a current practicing certificate, or its equivalent; be current members or fellows of ACN; not have received a scholarship or grant from the National Research and Scholarships Fund in the previous 2 years; and be undertaking postgraduate community nursing studies at Queensland University of Technology.
