Development Studies is an interdisciplinary field of teaching and research that takes 'development' as its central concern. It intends to study the improvement in people’s lives through the lens of human development. The course is designed to prepare students for a variety of careers where knowledge is required on the theoretical and policy issues in development. The course articulates with the 18 unit Graduate Certificate in Sustainable Development and the 72 unit Master of Sustainable Development, and the sequentially developed topics enable progression through the three awards. The course is also available as an exit award from the 72 unit Master of Sustainable Development, subject to meeting the requirements in the Program of Study below.

Structure

Students must complete five core (compulsory) topics and three option topics chosen from a range of option topics available. These topics aim to provide an understanding of current fundamental development issues and policy areas and the theories that inform them.

Standard entry requirements

Applicants must normally hold a bachelor degree or equivalent qualification from an approved tertiary institution.However, the Dean (Education) may, under certain circumstances and subject to specific conditions, admit others who can show evidence of fitness for candidature.
