This course is designed to facilitate the development of disciplinary knowledge in the area of language acquisition, as well as the area of teaching English to speakers of other languages. Students will investigate classroom issues related to TESOL and critique language teaching methodologies. Students also identify research trends in the field of teaching English to speakers of other languages.
Structure
Students complete three core (compulsory) topics aimed at providing students with the necessary understanding second language learning and teaching, and curriculum development, and research. Students must also complete five option topics chosen from a range of option topics available including language assessment, linguistics, language pedagogy, and new technologies in foreign language education.

Standard entry requirements
- Applicants must normally hold a bachelor degree or equivalent qualification
- Or hold the Graduate Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) or equivalent qualification.
Recognition
Graduates will not be eligible for teacher registration. Please see the Master of Teaching suite to undertake a postgraduate teaching qualification that leads to teacher registration.
Study pathways
The University may, under certain circumstances and subject to specific conditions, consider applicants who do not hold a bachelor degree or equivalent but can demonstrate relevant higher education study with relevant work experience, or relevant work experience which may meet the requirements for entry into the course.
