This graduate certificate aims to provide students with an overview of processes that determine the source, amount and flows of water in aquifers with a particular focus on aspects relating to water problems facing Australia. It is intended for scientists, engineers and other environmental professionals whose work requires groundwater knowledge to complete a professional and industry-focused study of groundwater hydrology. It is offered in partnership with the National Centre for Groundwater Research and Training, the largest centre specialising in groundwater education and research in the southern hemisphere.

Entry Requirements:

Applicants must normally hold an approved bachelor degree or equivalent qualification in a relevant discipline of science and engineering (such as agricultural science, biology, chemistry, earth sciences, environmental science, mathematics, physics, and engineering disciplines such as civil and/or environmental engineering).


The graduate certificate is an 18 unit program where students complete two core (compulsory) topics and two option topics chosen from a range of option topics available and aimed at providing students with an understanding of the basic scientific concepts relevant to groundwater, current pressing groundwater management issues and the technologies employed to deal with them. They also receive basic training in a range of field, laboratory and computational methods, as well as learning communication skills and problem-based and critical thinking skills.
