This degree aims to provide the opportunity for individuals from any professional background who are working in palliative care or a related area to deepen and extend their knowledge base in palliative and supported care within a global context and to address particular needs within their practice and employment. It also aims to provide the opportunity for students to develop as researchers who are able to communicate research evidence to professional communities.

Structure

Students complete four core (compulsory) topics, a research project and four option topics chosen from a range of option topics available. These topics aim to provide students the opportunity to critically appraise palliative care theory, research, ethics and the professional literature, further extending the students' knowledge and skills in this area and develop and complete a piece of independent intellectual work which adds to the existing body of knowledge in the area of palliative care.

Standard entry requirements

  • Applicants must normally hold a bachelor degree or equivalent qualification in dietetics, medicine, midwifery, nursing, occupational therapy, paramedic science, pharmacy, physiotherapy, psychology, speech pathology or social work, and have a minimum of two years' full-time equivalent clinical involvement in palliative care and/or supporting patients and families with a life-limiting illness by the commencement date of the course
  • Or hold the Graduate Certificate in Palliative Care, the Graduate Diploma in Palliative Care or the Graduate Diploma in Palliative Care in Aged Care.Applicants must provide details of their work experience in palliative care and/or supporting patients and families with a life-limiting illness in their SATAC application.

Study pathways

The University may, under certain circumstances and subject to specific conditions, consider applicants who do not hold a bachelor degree or equivalent but can demonstrate relevant higher education study with relevant work experience, or relevant work experience which may meet the requirements for entry into the course.
