This four-year accredited graduate degree gives you the chance to build knowledge of the law from a global and social justice perspective. You'll explore the law from an international perspective with a focus on current justice issues in this course. You'll also gain practical experience in areas like advocacy, mediation and negotiation, have opportunities to work with judges and magistrates, and undertake placements in real legal workplaces. The La Trobe Law School moot court gives students the chance to apply skills like client interviewing, witness examination and negotiation. La Trobe's mooting team participates in international competitions, so students can demonstrate their knowledge while building connections with lawyers, judges and academics from around the world. Students also have an opportunity to attend our winter school in Shanghai, held in partnership with Shanghai University Law School. There, you'll be introduced to the basic concepts and structure of Chinese law. You can apply to study this course at Melbourne Campus through La Trobe's Hallmark Scholars Program. Note for Bendigo students: Only the first two years of this course are offered in Bendigo. While it is possible to arrange long-distance learning, we recommend students transfer to the Melbourne Campus to complete their degree with a wider selection of subjects. Law electives are also available in intensive delivery at Melbourne in summer and winter schools.

Entry Requirements:

Units 3 and 4: a study score of at least 30 in English (EAL) or at least 25 in English other than EAL. International applicants must include a personal statement addressing relevant work experience, personal accomplishments and achievements, community involvement and career goals. NB: Meeting minimum prerequisites does not guarantee an offer of a place. Entry into all La Trobe courses is based on competitive selection and there may be limited places available.

Structure:

You need to: - complete a total of four years of full-time study or its equivalent (part-time study is only available to local students) - complete a sequence of the compulsory law subjects - complete a minimum of 480 credit points, including 360 credit points in law and a minimum of 120 credit points in other non-law disciplines. After completing first year, you can if you wish apply to transfer into a five-year double degree to extend your knowledge and skills in a particular area of interest (see descriptions of law double degrees for more information). Honours in law is offered in the final year based on academic merit. A grade average of B+ from two years of law study is typically required for entry into the Honours program.

Honours is offered to students whose work is of a sufficiently high standard and is undertaken in the final year of the course. International students must meet the academic and English language requirements of this course.

Recognition:

All La Trobe University Bachelor of Laws and Juris Doctor law courses include the subjects required by the Victorian Legal Admissions Board to qualify for admission to the legal profession in Victoria as an Australian lawyer. Admission to the legal profession by the Supreme Court of Victoria also requires the completion of practical legal training either by a 12-month period of Supervised Legal Training or by completing an approved practical legal training course (for example, at the Leo Cussen Institute or The College of Law). Candidates for admission to practise must also satisfy the Admissions Board that they are a fit and proper person to be admitted to practise.
