Finance is a new and important area of application of mathematics. There is a need to model and control uncertainty in financial markets and in financial arrangements. Employment opportunities exist in banks, corporations, the insurance and investment industry. Study of mathematical modelling, statistics and computing provides a strong grounding for a career in finance.

SACE Stage 2: Mathematical Methods IB: Mathematics (SL grade 4/HL grade 3). If Stage 2 studies were undertaken prior to 2017, the equivalent subject was known as Mathematical Studies

Structure:

This is a flexible academic program designed for students who wish to study mathematics, statistics or computing. Those studies can be combined with courses from commerce, design studies, economics, engineering, finance, humanities and social sciences or sciences. Students who do well in their courses may complete an additional year of study to obtain an Honours Degree of Bachelor of Mathematical and Computer Sciences in Pure Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, Statistics or Computer Science which provides opportunity for research and enhanced employment prospects.

Recognition:

Graduates of the Bachelor of Finance degree are entitled to recognition from several professional bodies. Some Bachelor of Finance courses provide opportunities for gaining affiliate membership of the Financial Services Institute of Australia (Finsia). They also cover material relevant for entry to the Chartered Financial Analysts and Financial Planning Association. Additionally, specific courses enable graduates of the Bachelor of Finance degree to obtain partial compliance with the Australian Securities and Investments Commission RG146 (tier 1 Compliance) in the areas of generic knowledge derivatives and securities.
