This qualification was developed in conjunction with and at the request of the Department for Education and Child Development (DECD). The program is designed for those instrumental music teachers who either do not have any teaching qualifications or who have attained a Diploma in Music or an equivalent. Participants will develop and assimilate effective methodologies in individual and group teaching, investigate and respond to legal and professional issues associated with music teaching, consider and incorporate the principles and processes of music education in their lessons and hone their ability to strategise and communicate in unfolding teaching situations. The Graduate Certificate in Music Teaching is a part-time program which can be taken over one (50% full-time load) or two (25% full-time load) years. Students will undertake courses in Individual and Group Teaching, Professional and Educational Issues, and Teaching Practicums. The timetable has been structured to have minimal impact on participants currently in the workforce. Some course are delivered online, and courses with face-to-face delivery are either scheduled to coincide with school holidays or have flexible times arranged individually.

Standard entry requirements

  • Diploma in Music in the main instrument/voice to be taught. Applicants who do not have a Diploma or equivalent will need to satisfy one of the following criteria: Submit a DVD to the Elder Conservatorium of Music comprising of at least 10 minutes performing time that clearly demonstrates performance abilities which includes either solo work or ensemble work with soloing sections
  • Or Attend a live performance audition (solo work) of at least 10 minutes duration to a University panel. Applicants must also provide the following supporting documentation: Personal CV, including professional development and musical activities and community engagement as a musician
  • No more than 3 examples of pupils' examinations or/and competition results (AMEB, SACE, Eisteddfod or equivalent
  • No more than 3 examples of pupils' performances (programs, DVD recordings etc.)
  • 2 references (including contact details of referees).

Further information

This program is designed for instrumental/vocal teachers already practising in schools who are not currently eligible to apply for Special Authority for an Unregistered Person to Teach category with the Teachers Registration Board of South Australia. Eligibility under this category from the Board will ensure their continued eligibility to teach in schools.
