The Bachelor of Primary Education (Honours) is an alternative final year option for students who have demonstrated excellence in the first three years of the Bachelor of Primary Education or the Bachelor of Primary Education (Dean’s Scholar) degree.This degree is a nationally accredited qualification for employment as a Kindergarten to Year 6 teacher in the public and independent school systems. You will learn through on-campus classes, online learning and school and community placements. The extensive professional experience program involves placement in schools from the second year of the degree allowing you to learn by observation and apply your skills in the classroom early in your degree. During your study you will have opportunities for rural professional experiences, to study overseas with UOW's international exchange and study abroad partners, and to join international cultural immersion programs.

Structure

The Bachelor of Primary Education (Honours) requires the successful completion of 192 credit points as specified below, including all Professional Experience components embedded in the course and the teaching performance assessment (UOW TPA) in EDPD402.Students have the option of completing the Mathematics and Numeracy in Education minor, however, it should be noted that this will be in addition to the minimum degree requirements and may extend the duration of the degree. This minor will offer students the opportunity to develop more comprehensive discipline and pedagogical knowledge, so they can facilitate enriched teaching practices in primary school classrooms. Subjects completed in this minor will count towards the NESA recognised Mathematics/Numeracy specialisation.Students must successfully complete 48 credit points to be eligible for the first Professional Experience.To be eligible for the final Professional Experience, students must have passed all core subjects in the first three and a half years of their degree, successfully completed the Literacy and Numeracy Test (LANTITE) and be enrolled in any annual and final semester core subjects.

Standard entry requirements

Students who are currently enrolled in either the Bachelor of Primary Education or Bachelor of Primary Education (Dean’s Scholar) and who have achieved a high level of academic performance in the first three years of their degree may apply to transfer to the Bachelor of Primary Education (Honours) degree and complete the fourth year at Honours level, provided they meet the entry requirements below:Completion of all required 100, 200 and 300 level subjects in the Bachelor of Primary Education/Bachelor of Primary Education (Dean’s Scholar) prior to admission to Honours.
