Victoria University (VU)

This qualification is part of the Metal and Engineering Training Package. It is for people employed at the basic production operator level in manufacturing, engineering and related industry areas. Students will gain the base level competencies required by an operator working in these areas. They will also acquire skills and knowledge in workplace communication, occupational health and safety, quality procedures systems and planning, plus some industry specific skills.

5 core units; plus electives to the value of at least 30 points

Core: Apply principles of occupational health and safety in the work environment; Plan to undertake a routine task; Apply quality systems; Apply quality procedures; Work with others in a manufacturing, engineering or related environment. Specialisation: Perform routine oxy acetylene welding; Carry out mechanical cutting; Perform manual heating and thermal cutting; Perform routine manual metal arc welding; Perform manual production welding; Perform routine gas tungsten arc welding; Perform routine gas metal arc welding; Perform hand forging; Use workshop machines for basic operations; Use comparison and basic measuring devices; Plan a complete activity; Use hand tools; Use power tools/hand held operations.

Victoria University is the only university in Australia to use the block teaching model, which has been in operation throughout Sweden and parts of North America for more than four decades.

First-year and second-year students at Victoria University complete one subject every four weeks, are assessed, and then proceed to the next four-week unit. Immersion in each subject allows students to master it, rather than juggling four units at once. From 2020, all students will be taught in this way.

Victoria University is one of only six Australian universities to combine higher education and vocational and further education with its Victoria University Polytechnic, which is based on multiple university campuses. The Polytechnic creates pathways direct to the workforce or to university degrees.

VU College offers English language courses, pathway diplomas and courses for international students at its Melbourne and Sydney campuses as well as offshore with international education partners.
