The Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood and Primary) prepare graduates to teach in both early childhood and primary school settings. The course will be of interest to individuals interested in pursuing a teaching career in which they can adapt their expertise to suit the learning needs of a broad age group (birth to 12 years). Course content focuses on three broad areas: Curriculum and pedagogy for birth to 12 years Creating inclusive learning environments that nurture diversity Transition to, and development of, a career in educationStudents will study a range of curriculum with a particular focus on the key curriculum areas of literacy, mathematics and science. For students planning to seek employment in the Catholic system, a specialist sequence in religious education is available. Our graduates will develop expertise to work with young children, their families and communities. They will develop skills to support the creation of learning environments that nurture and support children as they learn. Many of our students study education at ACU because they are interested in making a positive difference in the lives of children. We encourage our students to work collaboratively for justice in order to make and to share a more just and equitable society. Our Professional and Community Engagement program, embedded into our courses, provides a number of opportunities for students to complete practicum in settings that are consistent with these values. To ensure we graduate profession ready teachers we have built into the course a number of units focusing on the individual development of a teacher. Units include: Curriculum Decision-making in the Early Years: Connections and Continuities. Early Childhood Leadership, Management and Advocacy. Transition into the ProfessionGraduates of the Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood and Primary) are well positioned for further study in the Master of Education.

Structure

320 credit points. Students must complete professional experience units during which time they are required to be available full-time. All students enrolled must have the appropriate approvals before they may enter a classroom. These are: Blue Card (Qld), Working with Vulnerable People (ACT) or Working with Children Check (NSW and Vic). International students must bring police check documentation from their own countries. All students who have lived in another country for 12 months or more must provide a police check from that country for that period. Supervised professional experience is at the heart of all our pre-service teacher education courses and the Faculty will find appropriate placements to suit the needs of your course. Placements will usually be arranged for the scheduled placement period in the professional experience calendar though this may not always be possible. Graduates of this course must have completed a total of 95 days of professional experience across the prior-to-school and school context.

Standard entry requirements

  • An applicant must also comply with the Admission to Coursework Programs Policy that includes meeting a minimum ATAR requirement. Assumed knowledge includes minimum requirements in English and Mathematics. In addition, applicants will be required to demonstrate suitability for teaching. All applicants need to meet the English Language Proficiency requirements as defined in the Admission to Coursework Programs Policy. To be eligible for admission to the course, an applicant must have completed the following prerequisites at year 12 level, or equivalent: Australian Capital Territory Prerequisites: Nil Assumed knowledge: Major in English (T) and Major in Mathematics (T) New South Wales Prerequisite: Nil Assumed knowledge: A minimum of three Band 5 HSC results, including one in English
  • Two units of Mathematics Band 4 Queensland Prerequisites: English (Units 3 & 4, C)
  • General Mathematics, Mathematical Methods or Specialist Mathematics (Units 3 & 4, C)
  • A General science subject (Units 3 & 4, C) Victoria Prerequisites: English (Units 3 and 4) - a study score of at least 30 in English (EAL) or 25 in any other English
  • Mathematics Units 1 and 2 - two units (any study combination) of General Mathematics or Mathematical Methods or Specialist Mathematics or Units 3 and 4 (any Mathematics). *Disclaimer: The Course entry requirements above are for 2021 Admission. Refer to your relevant Tertiary Admission Centre website for future years' entry requirements. OR Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander applicants may be selected following an interview with the course coordinator and staff of the campus Indigenous Higher Education Unit.
