Matt — Bachelor of Information Technology and Systems

Why did you choose to study computing and IT?

I ™ve had a keen interest in computers and technology for a number of years, and I ™ve been working in the field for a while too. I chose my course so that I could further my career.

What is the best thing about your course?

The best thing about my course is the variety of areas you learn about within the IT industry. Although I ™m currently completing an IT systems degree, I have leant about many different areas of the industry, which has given me a taste of what it has to offer.

What is the worst thing about your course?

The balance of full-time work and part-time study over the past two years has been a challenge for me to juggle. Fortunately, my workplace is flexible, and this allows me to attend classes and have time off to study for exams.

What did/does your course involve?

My course is made up of a bit of everything. Lectures are a time to discuss new learning areas and topic within your unit. They don ™t get too technical as these classes are more around understanding the basics. Technical discussions are more common in tutorials.

The tutorials allow students to discuss topics they have touched on in lectures on a more technical level. We generally work within small groups and discuss solutions to questions or possible scenarios raised by the tutor. Laboratory classes allow students to get in front of a computer and try out what they have learnt and discussed in lectures.

Have you found work in your field?

Before starting my course I had already been employed in the IT field. The reason for starting my degree after having already worked in the field was for me to be able to grow my knowledge and experience within some other areas that work cannot provide for me. Before starting my current role, I had successfully completed a certificate III and IV in information technology.

What advice would you give to students considering studying computing and IT?

My strongest recommendation to students is to ensure they are motivated throughout their course. If the motivation and the passion are not there it will become difficult for students to complete the degree and complete it well. Computers and technology are ever-changing so it is important to keep up with what is happening within the industry. Students can keep up to date by reading articles, books or by simply researching online.

Will you complete further study?

It is a goal of mine to go on to complete a masters degree once I ™ve finished my course.
