Rita — Bachelor of Architectural Design
Why did you choose to study architecture?
I had always wanted to study design, and architecture was top of my list. I couldn't believe it when I got in! I had studied art, graphics, maths and physics in school. Architecture combines a creative way of thinking with structured technical thought which suited my brain perfectly.
What was the best thing about your course?
Architecture is a hands-on course full of innovation, technology and creativity. The best thing about my course is learning a discipline that has existed for thousands of years and is always evolving. My course offered a wide range of classes and different streams to follow, so you could tailor the course for your own direction.
What was the worst thing about your course?
Architecture is a lot of work. You have to be prepared to work really hard and get used to sleep deprivation!
What did your course involve?
It involved lectures and tutorials, but the main class (and most important) is design studio, which you take every semester. Design studio is like a tutorial but in more of workshop style. There's more of a dialogue between the student and tutor.
What are your job prospects after graduating?
I have just completed the undergraduate part of the degree, so I will need to complete the masters component before looking for a job.
What advice would you give to students considering studying architecture?
Be prepared to work hard, as the results are worth it. Work experience is key, get as much as possible while studying. And harass your tutors and lecturers for as much knowledge as you can get out of them!
Will you complete further study?
The masters component is a requirement in my field, so I will need to complete this in order to pursue a career as an architect.
