Master of Fine Art (By Research)

Federation University Australia

This dynamic course emphasises research through creative practice. The program requires students to develop a research project that results in a new body of creative or visual work with accompanying written and visual documentation. The documentation is a commentary that outlines the development of the project and its conclusion, and provides a critical context within which the work may be viewed and assessed. The written commentary will be between 10,000 and 20,000 words, with a photographic record of the visual or creative work being bound into the document. Written work is not examined separately but considered together with an exhibition of new visual works, which demonstrate a conclusion to the research proposal at the master level.

Federation University Australia (FedUni) is one of the country’s leading universities, with an enviable reputation for teaching excellence and graduate employment rates.

Headquartered in regional Victoria, with campuses in Ballarat, Gippsland, the Wimmera and Berwick in Melbourne, FedUni’s standing is based on nearly 150 years of education delivery.

A new Berwick Campus caters for the growing south-east Melbourne area, while a new Brisbane Campus and student support centre in Malaysia cater to the international student market.

FedUni embraces the freedom and dynamism that come from being a progressive university with close links to industry, business, communities and technology.

It is also recognised as a welcoming and friendly university, with students drawn from regional centres and metropolitan cities as well as from overseas.

Known for its supportive, inclusive environment, FedUni offers affordable study options (including online), learning assistance to help you stay at uni, small class sizes, friendly staff and accessible academic support. We are also one of few universities that offer free on-campus parking for students.

Our students have the opportunity to stay on campus with a range of residential options. The university places great emphasis on the quality of its teaching and learning, the student experience, and importantly, employability once you have graduated.

As a dual-sector university, we deliver a range of programs through higher education and TAFE, and have the ability to find the right pathway for your success.

Facilities such as the Nanya Environmental Research Station in western New South Wales and the Manufacturing and Industry Skills Centre in central Ballarat anchor the range of programs that FedUni delivers.

The university’s Australian Centre for Research into Injury in Sport and its Prevention (ACRISP) is recognised as Australia’s premier sports injury prevention research centre. It is one of only four such centres worldwide to be selected by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) as a member of the IOC Medical Research Network.

FedUni also hosts Australia’s largest regional technology park — accommodating more than 30 companies, including its signature tenant, IBM — where FedUni IT students are engaged in the ‘earn as you learn’ program, earning a wage as part of their studies.

The University’s Arts Academy in Ballarat and the Gippsland Centre for Art and Design are a major provider of performing arts, music theatre and art programs.

The University is constantly adding to its list of programs and courses across its faculties and campuses, with criminology, outdoor environmental education and the nation’s first nature pedagogy course among more recent offerings.

The University’s Gippsland campus offers a range of exciting programs. An easy drive from Melbourne and located within easy walking distance of the town of Churchill, it offers the benefits of a regional lifestyle with city access.

Our Wimmera campus also provides a wide range of programs for students throughout Horsham, Ararat, Stawell and western Victoria.

Other features of our campuses include art galleries, an indoor swimming pool and gym, a golf course and childcare facilities.
