This course is designed for professionals wishing to develop an Emotionally Focused approach to counselling. The Emotionally Focused approach to individual and couple counselling is a comprehensive and integrative approach focusing on emotional experience, and includes working with feelings, thinking and expectations as well as behaviour. The focus of this program is the assessment, exploration and working with emotional experience. This program will focus on the counselling process, providing structured yet flexible protocols for assessment and ongoing counselling work. Protocols for intervening using verbal and creative methods, such as focusing, visualisation, drawing and cushion work, are provided and demonstrated. Counsellors have an opportunity to consider and practise these verbal and creative techniques for exploring symptomatic behaviours, negative experiences, and self-critical thinking and behaviour.

  • Students must complete 125 counselling sessions in their work environment. Students are required to complete a number of compulsory courses and workshops and a minimum of one elective, to the value of 22 points. Subjects include: Emotion Focused work, Working with Experience, Experiencing Emotion, Focusing, Emotional Signature, Adult-Child Polarity, Clinical Day 1, Clinical Day 2

Further information

Students are required to complete 10-15 hours of Emotionally Focused supervision from an approved supervisor. Students must complete 5-10 hours of supervision with a trainer. Students may apply to use work supervision only if the supervisor is approved by the Institute. Students will be required to submit a case-study accompanied by a video/audio tape of a counselling session within 6 months of completing all subjects for the award of Graduate Certificate.
